The #1 rule
When in doubt, underwater. Most succulent problems come from soil that stays wet. Water thoroughly, then wait until the mix is dry before watering again. Never leave the pot sitting in a saucer of water.
Light
- Bright light. A south or west window is ideal (about 4-6+ hours of strong light).
- Soft leaves stretching toward the window? They want more light.
- Move outdoors only after frost risk, and ease into full sun so they do not scorch.
Water
- Soak until water drains out the bottom, then empty the saucer.
- Wait until soil is dry (often every 1-3 weeks; less in winter).
- Wrinkled or puckered leaves mean thirsty. Soft, translucent, or mushy leaves mean too wet.
- Fresh arrangements: roots need a week or two to lock in. Handle by the pot.
Soil & pot
Keep them in a pot with a drainage hole and cactus/succulent mix (or potting soil bulked up with perlite). Decorative pots without holes should be used as outer sleeves only.
Feed & seasons
Light fertilizer in spring-summer only (half strength; cactus food is fine). Skip feeding in winter when growth slows.
Column cactus cuttings
If you took home a San Pedro or torch cutting: wait to water after potting. Give it a week or two dry so roots can start before the first real drink.
